Teriyaki Glazed Yellowtail

Sorry I've been lazy these days... I haven't updated this blog very often lately. The thing is that I didn't feel like doing much of anything last week, and then, my younger sis and her kids came to stay over the weekend. (We had a long weekend with last Monday being a makeup holiday.) Oh, it WAS an eventful weekend, as it always is when they are with us. We took kids to dad's orchard to pick some oranges and edible wild plants, to the cape for a quick geotour, to the beach for jogging, and to the fishing port for fishing (in a terrible wind and yellow sand). Hahaha... And of course we had good meals.

Dad bought another whole yellowtail (7.7kg) at the nearby fishing port. (I'm not going to tell you how much it cost, because I don't know exactly. But I'm pretty sure that our price is less than 30% of its price in big cities. How 'bout that, huh?) We enjoyed it grilled, as sashimi, and buri-shabu, too. The last one may not sound familiar -- it is the fish version of a Japanese meat dish called shabu-shabu. Honestly speaking, I wasn't too crazy about this hot pot dish that my sister brought into mom's kitchen. To eat shabu-shabu, you put, with chopsticks, a piece of meat(fish) into boiling broth, swish back and forth a few times, take it out and immediately dip into sauce and eat. Doing the same thing with yellowtail slices, I found it difficult to know the perfect timing to eat. If the fish was cooked completely, it was no better than regular fish in regular hotpot dish, and when undercooked, it was too fishy for me.

Anyway, after being stuffed with the yellowtail dishes on day 1 and yakiniku on day 2, my younger sis and her kids went home yesterday. And I was too busy to take any food photos throughout the long weekend!! :O What a shame! Am I really a foodblogger??

The top photo is what I prepared this afternoon with the leftover, not-so-fresh yellowtail. The recipe for the glaze sauce? Well, it's a classic proportion so I guess I can put it up here without worrying about copyright? It's basically sake, soy sauce and mirin mixed together, and the proportion is 1:1:1. If you like it sweet, you might want to add some white sugar, maybe half the amount of mirin? Or you might want to add a little ginger to the sauce to add some refreshing flavor. You need to grill the fish first in a frying pan until it is almost done inside, then you pour in the sauce to give glossy sheen. If you marinate the fish fillet in the sauce or poured in the sauce too soon, the outside would probably burn before the inside is done.

Baby Ume Plums

Baby Ume Plums

Look at these baby ume plums! Aren't they adorable? I'm sure that mom and I will be working like crazy again when the ume season comes this year.

To tell you the truth, I haven't been doing much cooking/baking lately. For the last three months I worked from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, 5 days a week, and mom dominated the kitchen. Now I don't work there any more, but still I cannot find my place in the kitchen here at my parents' house. *Sigh*

So here I'm posting a photo from last summer, because I haven't taken any food photos for a while. This photo IS related to this topic of ume plum, at least, because ume miso is used for this dish.

Last summer mom and I made this ume miso when we harvested a whole bunch of ume plums in dad's orchard. To make the dish above, all you have to do is blanch and chop green onions (negi), boil and slice squid, mix and dress with ume miso. That's it. (Sprinkle with some white sesame seeds, if desired.) The dish is similar to this nuta salad with vinegar miso dressing, but it turns out so much more refreshing (and easy, too) when used this ume miso.

And the Challenges Go On.. Part 8


When mom finally went to the hospital to have her foot checked, I thought that the end of her agony was close.
Well, things are never that easy.

As I had written in my previous posts, mom started seeing a doctor at the end of January for her foot problem. First, seeing her X-ray, the doctor said that her problem was a minor bone fracture and a tiny piece of the bone was missing. Then, after the MRI scan, he said that that bone was not missing but just its color was turned really dark, most likely due to osteoporosis. But her foot have been badly swollen for months, and now, after about a month of treatment, it is still the same; the swelling has not improved at all.

Mom said that the doctor did not even take a look at her foot for the past couple of weeks and just kept giving her the same medication. Then yesterday, according to mom, he examined her foot and said that the swelling could not be from the osteoporosis. Oh, yeah. Thanks for supporting the idea our family had had for WEEKS. And he put an extremely expensive ankle supporter on her foot, without even asking her if she wanted it or she could afford it, and also told her to come back next week for another MRI scan. Doc, have you ever thought that most of your patients -- grandmas and grandpas in the countryside -- may not make as much money as you do???!!!

I can understand if we get charged a lot when the treatment dramatically worked and the illness was cured. But at the moment, the reason why we have to keep paying more and more is because the doctor cannot find out what the real problem is. It's no fun. :(

So, my work as a data input operator finished at the end of February and now I'm unemployed again. My humble saving will be all gone next month, and I have not found a new job yet.
But I'm not feeling down or anything. Right now my mind is occupied with a trip abroad next month-- I'm going to Malaysia this coming April!

Yesterday dad came home from the nearby fishing port with a big boxful of sardines. In the yellowtail season, sometimes loads of sardines come into the fishing net, too. Such sardines are not really good ones and fishermen often give them away to local people. Mom and I spent a whole day cleaning them. And yesterday and today, we ate sardines at every single meal. Grilled, breaded and deep-fried, vinegared and simmered... Hope the DHA would make me smarter for at least several days. ;)

Oh, BTW, the tsunami from the recent Chile earthquake measured about 20 cm in my hometown and caused no serious damage. Thanks for your concern.
